attribute NC_GLOBAL summary String The Challenger Glider Mission is inspired by the first global scientific ocean survey conducted by the HMS Challenger from 1872 to 1876. The goals of the mission are to establish a collaborative international network of autonomous underwater glider ports, to assess the predictive skill of global ocean models while contributing real-time profile data for assimilation into ocean forecast models by operational centers worldwide, and to crowdsource student-based ocean research and discovery. This glider is providing subsurface velocity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, salinity, and density profile observations. The RU29 planned mission extends east from Barbados to serve as a data scout for thermohaline staircase variability for the FKt260806/SPICE cruise aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s R/V Falkor (too). Real-time datasets will include CTD data provided to the IOOS Glider DAC and GTS to support ocean and atmospheric weather forecasting.

attribute instrument_adcp description String A 1 MHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) designed specifically for use on gliders for water velocity measurements. Fully integrated solutions are available for the Kongsberg Seaglider, Scripps Spray Glider, and Webb Slocum Glider. The AD2CP features 4 beams; beams 1 and 3 are angled at 47.5 degrees and beams 2 and 4 are angled at 25 degrees. This enables 3D velocities to be calculated during both ascent and descent of the glider. The AD2CP can operate two modes; Single (burst or average) or Concurrent (burst and average). It features 16 GB of onboard data storage with an optional increase to 64 GB. The Glider1000 AD2CP features an average profiling range of 30 m (25 m in burst mode), with a minimum blanking distance of 0.1 m. It has an operating temperature range of -4 to +40 degC, and is depth-rated to 1000 m. It has a bottom tracking range of 30 m, a velocity resolution of 0.1 cm s-1, and a maximum sampling rate of 16 Hz.

attribute instrument_optode description String A dissolved oxygen sensor designed to mount on RCM 9 or RDCP 600 or similar OEM applications. Measurement is based on the ability of selected substances to act as dynamic fluorescence quenchers. The fluorescent indicator is a special platinum porphyrin complex embedded in a gas permeable foil that is exposed to the surrounding water. A black optical isolation coating protects the complex from sunlight and fluorescent particles in the water. This sensing foil is attached to a window providing optical access for the measuring system from inside a watertight plastic and titanium housing (depth rating 300m).The foil is excited by modulated blue light, and the phase of a returned red light is measured. By linearizing and temperature compensating, with an incorporated temperature sensor, the absolute O2 concentration can be determined.. O2 Concentration range 0-500 uM, accuracy +/- 5% or 8uM, resolution <1 uM. Air Saturation range 0-120%, accuracy +/- 5%, resolution <0.4%.

attribute platform description String A long-range autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) based on buoyancy. It is used for remote water column sampling. It uses hydraulic buoyancy change to alter the vehicle density in relation to the surrounding water thereby causing the vehicle to either float or sink. Given an appropriate dive or climb angle, the wings and body lift and convert some of this vertical motion into a forward saw tooth horizontal motion. Periodically, the glider surfaces and calls via Iridium Satellite Phone (anywhere in world) or Free Wave RF Modem (line of sight) in to Dockserver (auto attendant computer) to relay navigational fix, data and receive further instructions for command and control. The glider is capable of storm sampling and can be flown in a coordinated fleet. It is 1.5 m in length, has a hull diameter of 22 cm and mass of 54 kgs. It has an exchangeable payload (capacity up to 6 L) which is capable of housing a variety of environmental sensors such as nitrate and oxygen. It uses lithium or alkaline batteries. It has a deployment range of 600-6000 km, a deployment length of 15 days to 12 months and an operating depth range of 4-1000m. Navigation is via GPS waypoints, a pressure and altimeter sensor. Maximum speed is .35 m/s. It transmits via RF modem, Iridium (RUDICS), ARGOS or acoustic modem.
